Hm. I have to say that my opinion here might be biased by the fact of my having just read a pile of good books by great authors. After that, even a good author will come off poorly by the comparison. And I can’t tell if Wilson is good or somewhere south of that balmy locale.

He gives the impression of an author trying too hard. The work comes off stilted—and not in an admirable, Vonnegut-esque sort of way. It is just the first chapter though and The Count of Monte Cristo didn’t exactly jump off that page at me until around chapter eleven, so if I’m feeling frisky I may give chapter two a shot in the dark.

    What did you guys think?

I should mention that I write this as someone who loved Wilson’s work on Blackthorn Winter.
