The first trailer for The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is out: the movie itself will be released in December.

Aside from the usual hokey trailer things, I see a few items of interest here: first, DUFFLEPUDS! Second, must we trot out the White Witch for every single movie in the series (I admit that she was used quite well in Prince Caspian, despite my initial qualms, but it seems like there’s a limit to how many times you can pull that trick)? Third, we only see Eustace Clarence Scrubb a couple of times, but that probably makes sense for the trailer, since he’s not a returning character. Fourth, please stop calling The Chronicles of Narnia “epic.” Overall, it looks like there will be some substantial departures from the book, but, having been pleasantly surprised by Prince Caspian, I’m ready to give VDT the benefit of the doubt.

About the Author

Carissa Turner Smith is a compulsive reader, writer, and Irish dancer. She earned her Ph.D. in English at Penn State and currently teaches writing and American literature at Charleston Southern University. At age three, she announced that all she wanted to do was “sit at a desk and read and write,” and she has been trying to make good on that promise ever since. Fortunately, she is occasionally distracted from this mission by her husband Stephen and their cheese-obsessed cat. A loyal native of Arkansas, she has always loved the fact that Jesus dwelt in an underappreciated corner of Galilee (see John 1:46).
