Cake’s version of “I Will Survive” is definitely awesomeness, recontextualizing the song for greater interest.

Jeff Buckley OWNS Hallelujah.
One of my favourite covers is what David Cook did to Billie Jean on Idol last year. You can’t get better than an emo rock ballad to make Michael Jackson palatable. I also think of the many, many, many covers I’ve heard of A Whiter Shade of Pale, Sarah Brightman’s is by far the most masterful (not that it’s a big shock, since she’s incredible).

Tom Waits’ cover of Books Of Moses
Demon Hunter’s cover of Snap Your Fingers, Snap Your Neck
Stavesacre’s cover of Fascination Street
“Smooth Criminal” by Alien Ant Farm. Nothing too spectacular, but catchy and had a quite vicious parody of Michael Jackson in the video.
Jimi Hendrix “All Along the Watchtower.” So good you never realize he took it from Bob Dylan.
Kevin Max (Smith) released a few covers as well… My Sweet Lord (originally by George Harrison) and Save Me (originally by Queen) are fantastic.
I’ve always loved Stretch Arm Strong’s cover of “Express Yourself” (the one on the Too Legit… comp – definitely not the album version), and they did a pretty great job with “Angel of the Silences,” too.
MxPx’s “Summer of ’69,” also pretty enjoyable.
Copeland’s “Another Day in Paradise,” Evergreen Terrace’s cover of Hum’s single, “Stars,” and Starflyer 59′s cover of “Happy Birthday John” would all make the list.
Oh, and finally, Save Ferris’ version of “Come on, Eileen.”

Oh, yeh, and Rufus’ version of Hallelujah is undoubtedly the best one of the three.
Also, I can’t believe that Johnny Cash’s “Hurt” slipped my mind. That might very well be my all time favorite cover.
