Honestly, not having seen the film (which I now wish to see, just because I am a major Keats fan as well as a Romanticist by profession), my initial reaction on seeing the subject of your review was, "What is there to dramatize about Keats and Brawne?" There's just not a lot to visualize, there; even if we did have Brawne's letters to draw on (and it may be a mercy to memory that we don't), it would be one seriously talky movie. The only really dramatic feature of Keats' gifted life was its brevity, and it seems likely that only that brevity kept his relationship with Brawne from turning into one of those embarrassing suppressions of youth--or, if they were luckier than they deserved, a rather prosaic marriage with occasional glimpses of the poetic affair they never quite had.

I haven't seen her version of A Portrait of a Lady, but I hear it's deadly dull . . . which might mean she's actually well-matched with the material there. (Sorry, Henry James. But not really.)

How does Campion keep getting funding for films if she's this mismatched for the material she selects?
