The Magicians crosses the lines between the sometimes enemy camps of “literary fiction” and “genre fiction” (sci-fi, fantasy, mystery, Western, etc.). I’d love to see more crossovers in the future.

Might I then recommend David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas. It's a fantastic novel written chiastically that spans six eras, with each being delivered via a different medium of communication and fulfilling a different genre-role. Both Michelle and I found it quite enjoyable.

And it won the Rooster in 2005!

By the way, I just wanted to say that I really appreciate your book-related articles. I'm about 2/3 through Octavian Nothing (on your recommendation last year) and loving it.
