Yeah, I think for the more part, the anticipation for the game is more of a guarded interest. It would be cool if the game were awesome, but unlike with future, say, Half-Life additions, nobody's actually expecting greatness.

Yeah. I mean Blow has a lot of good points, but he does tend to overstate his case. Have you listen/watched his Design Reboot address? It was pretty thought provoking (in some of the ways that CAPC intends to be) and some of his critique gets at what is one of the barriers holding gaming back from realizing its potential.

About Bioshock, he says (among other things):
Bioshock claims to be about altruism and humanity, but here is what it really teaches:

Shoot everyone you see without warning, from as far away as possible. Only care for women and pre-teen girls. It's a very weird game that we couldn't proffer as an example to normal humans.

I don't know if you read The Escapist Magazine at all (I've linked it here several times before), but even though they're not a visually awesome a magazine as they used to be (having finally succumbed to a web model rather than a print magazine model), they do have some awesome articles. Particularly, this one called "Jonathan Blow's Shifting Intention" makes a good summary of Blow's ideal direction for gaming. He accurate-slash-ignorant claims that games like WoW are unethical and exploitative and breed addiction intentionally.

Yeah, I've noticed that a lot of my favorite gaming "autuers" pretty much hate each other. I've come to accept it as visionaries committed to their own vision.

Bioshock was absolutely awesome, but it does wrap up rather conclusively. And yeah, I can't wait to see Braid, as I hear such wonderful things about it. Ironically, Jonathan Blow (creator of Braid) pours the hate on Bioshock. And, incidentally, one of my perennial favourites: WoW.

And I should confess here that I have yet to be anywhere near finishing Bioshock. All I know is I want more of the same.

The Dane, you will need to write a review of Braid when you play it. I finished it the other day and was blown away.

2009 looks to be a pretty dry year to me.

Starcraft II looks neat but not must-have for me, since I didn't play the prequel and am not sure yet that it'll will bring anything amazing to the fairly played out RTS genre.

Bioshock 2 may be cool, but I'm honestly not sure where the story can naturally go after the conclusion to the first one. It would almost have to be a whole different game and story that might make use of similar mechanics.

I suppose it Introversion releases anything in 2009, that would be worth checking out. And if I had a PS3, I would definitely pick up God of War III, but otherwise, I'll probably just stick with 2008 releases. I still want to try Assassin's Creed, GTA IV, Braid (when it hits PC), and Wrath of the Lich King. Oh, and Persona 4—though I have a hard time seeing it surpass Persona 3.

@Alan - Wasn't Heavy Rain the movie about aliens invading earth through the mode of raindrops that they were trying to make in Bowfinger?

2009 promises to offer a number of interesting games that immerse players into virtual worlds, some replicating reality and some creating their own reality. For of view of some of the best 2009 games, here is a good article I came across: http://www.gamedaily.com/articles/galleries/best-games-of-2009/
