I really enjoyed this book and found it interesting from the point of view of an Australian Evangelical Christian. The Christian cultural landscape is very different here in Australia, especially in Sydney. Rapture Ready helped me to get a better understanding of this different world that I'm part of but in some ways just as much on the outside as American non Christians. I wrote a short review on my blog: http://joelamoroney.wordpress.com/2008/06/14/book-review-rapture-ready/

I'll settle for amused humility if you will!

Seriously, thanks for the generous and thoughtful review. I would only like to point out that my "they want to save us" comment referred specifically to people such as Peretti's fans who conflate politics and religion. My concern was not so much "they want us to accept Jesus" as "they believe that all our opinions about society are a function of being in thrall to Satan." While I understand that you seek my salvation, I suspect that we could have civil discussion about politics without that as a precondition.

I did meet some Christians -- well, one: Jay Bakker -- who argued that Christians who are friendly with non-Christians because they think it's the best form of witnessing are being unacceptably underhanded. But I don't go that far. I'm cool with "lifestyle evangelism." We'd probably get along just fine.

I am sad to say it, but it is all too true that Christians take themselves too seriously and God to lightly!

This looks like it's a good critique of the church today, I'll have to look into it. Thanks Carissa.
