Lewis was very clear that when the series was complete, the Magician's Nephew should be read first. However, I don't think he could have forseen the now-common prequel! When I read the stories to my kids, I am definitely going with the order they were written in... somehow it just introduces the world more clearly. And Magician's Nephew is much more interesting when you instantly recognize things like the lamppost, Jadis, and talking animals.
