Dane,

Your point is well taken. It depends where we let the news take us. I know that when I get it in large doses, it often times skews my perspective. Also, when I hear bad news, I need to not allow myself to become an uninvolved spectator but rather it should draw me in with prayer and compassion.

Bill Reichart's last blog post..Divorce statistics - fact or fiction?

The Dane, I think you're absolutely right, though there's still the danger as a Christian for our focus to be shifted a bit by what the news finds to be important.

Actually, I think the impoverished state of our society (as portrayed on the news) drives us toward hope rather than away from it. Our hope is not in earthly anything but in the consummation of all that is and the final experience of the coming of the kingdom.

As Paul reminds us in Romans 5, "More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us." This was not a hope that things would get better in this life, but a hope for the world to come.
